The project produced a free local food directory to encourage people to purchase local products from local suppliers. They found 35 suppliers within a 10 mile radius of Chew Magna, all were approached and agreed to be included in the booklet. The directory was launched with an open day that all the suppliers attended. Then direct distribution to households in Chew Magna and stocked by the suppliers.
Objectives
- To promote local food producers and suppliers
- To reduce the amount of carbon used to transport food over long distances
- To produce a local food directory for the public
Outcomes
They have not measured success in any definite way – but have distributed 5,000 directories and know it is referred to by lots of people. There is lots of anecdotal evidence of its success, one being a large increase in the local vegetable box scheme, allowing them to take on more land for production.
Some changes have occurred since it was produced and more people want to be in it. They are now looking at a bigger an online directory for all suppliers, but paper copies also important.
Resources- Time: Held an open
day to focus on the project. Then 3 months to collect ideas and do the
research. 5 people worked on it with 1 person taking the lead.
- Expertise: Have design skills within the group to produce booklet
- Funding: It cost approximately £400 for 5,000 copies with the money raised through donations to Go Zero. They thought they had produced too many, but nearly all have gone within 18 months.
