Transition Bristol Coreteam Corner

Greetings from the Transition Bristol coreteam!
We hope that you all had a lovely holiday season. Transition Bristol had their first meeting of the New Year on 20 January after an extended winter break. We are excited about what we are hoping to accomplish this year.

The Coreteam currently consists of Paul Baker of Sustainable Thornbury, Angela Raffle of Sustainable Redland, Ciaran Mundy of Transition Montpelier, and Kristin Sponsler and Simone Osborn of Transition BS3.

As a coreteam, we help coordinate the following current "support" functions and resources:
  • Maintaining Transition Bristol website and newsletter (thanks to Jane Buttigieg for her help with the newsletter and help from Ale Fernandez and Ed Mitchell on the website).
  • Fielding inquiries and requests for speakers, stalls, and support from Transition groups.
  • Neighbourhood Welcome pack (available on website)
  • We have a copy of 'In Transition' of anyone who wishes to borrow it, email team@transitionbristol.net
  • We hold several peak oil related DVDs, just email team@transitionbristol.net should you wish to borrow them  For a full list, see here
  • We hold Transition exhibition boards which you can borrow by emailing team@transitionbristol.net
  • We are continuing to "Reimagine Bristol" with our main areas of work centering around engaging with the Bristol Partnership and the Council around the Peak Oil Report.
  • We also run monthly 'sofa sessions', details of the next one can be found here
Read more about the Transition Bristol Core Team.
Next neighbourhood meeting
Following the succesful get together of main contacts from Bristol Transition and Sustainability groups in November, it is hoped that another meeting can be held sometime in March. This will be more open and everyone will be more than welcome to attend.
One possible item for discussion is the report 'Building a positive future for Bristol after Peak Oil' and how we can move it around Bristol.
The accompanying exhibition at the CREATE Centre can travel round Bristol, and if Transition and sustainability groups can find somewhere in their geographical area of Bristol to host it, it would provide an excellent opportunity for awareness raising.  Hopefully people will get in touch with other items for discussion so that we can meet again as the last meeting was very productive.
These meetings are neighbourhood led and inspired, so if you ever wish to propose an item for discussion at a neighbourhood meeting, or would like to suggest a speaker, open space topic discussion or anything else,  please get in touch on transitionjane@yahoo.com

If you are already organising an event of your own and would like to publicise it on the website or this newsletter, send it to events@transitionbristol.net
Carbon energy dependency and effective social change
Want to share your ideas, expertise and experiences with researchers? You are invited to a meeting with local Bristol University researchers interested in local, concrete ideas and projects inspired by social action and concern about climate change. We hope to develop a project that would be mutually interesting for researchers and community groups, particularly around community initiatives that reduce energy demand. Come and discuss! - Feb.15th. 6-8pm. Location to be confirmed but curry supper (incl. veg) will be provided. Please contact Bronwen Morgan (B.Morgan@bristol.ac.uk) for further information
Easton Energy Group
Sofa The next meeting will be on Thursday 11th March 7:30pm at Easton Community Centre.
FOOD, inc.  The Movie
Monday 15th Feb, 18:30 Vue Cinema, Longwell Green
19th-25th Feb 20:20 The Watershed
The Soil Association is proud to be the official charity partner of this eye opening documentary which reveals how supermarkets have worked with governments to keep food costs artificially low, to the detriment of our health, animal welfare and the livelihood's of farmers - revealing surprising - and often shocking truths about what we eat and how it's produced. Food, Inc is more than just 'food for thought'; it's an opportunity for activism and essential viewing for any health-conscious citizen. You'll never look at dinner in the same way again!

Can you help with this Newsletter?
It involves being receiving emails about different events and then collating them into an online programme which is easy to learn.  Help will be given initially, just to show you how it all works.  Putting the final newsletter together takes about two hours. Please contact transitionjane@yahoo.com for more information.
Awareness raising
I did some training just over a year ago on how to give a Transition talk.  I am still very interested in spreading the word about peak oil and Transition throughout the City and would like to get a group of people together into an awareness raising team to start doing this.  If you have a good knowledge of peak oil and climate change issues, or have access to a screen and projector I would love to hear from you. I would particularly like to hear from others who have done the Transition training or those who are active in neighbourhood groups.  We could potentially put on other events such as films or bring in speakers. Please contact me on transitionjane@yahoo.com
In Transition-The Movie
You can borrow this film for group viewings.  Would you like to know more about Transition?  Would you like to organise a viewing of this DVD at a group in which you are involved? It doesn't have to be an environment group. It could be a craft group, reading group, guides group...whatever! Please contact team@transitionbristol.net and we'll see what we can do to help.
Our Transition Neighbours
If you are just outside the Bristol area, you may be interested to know that there are Transition groups in Long Ashton, Pill, Portishead, Nailsea, Backwell, Winscombe and Weston, as well as an umbrella group called Target 80 in the Chew Valley.
See here for more information.

Transition Bristol December Newsletter

by Jane Buttigieg — last modified Dec 03, 2008 12:24 PM

A monthly newsletter produced by Transition Bristol. This month's newsletter reflects on the achievements of the past year and looks forward to 2009.

Hello everyone,

Reflecting on the past year...

Transition Bristol has achieved a lot this year. There are active Transition neighbourhood groups across the City and Transition Bristol has a strong and very committed Core Team which has achieved some really positive things in 2008.

We have continued to hold the monthly network meetings, some of them themed, from which we have had good feedback.  We have developed our website with the help of some really enthusiastic volunteers and send out a monthly newsletter with an ever increasing number of subscribers.

We have also run stalls at the Organic Food Festival and had a presence at the Schumacher Conference.  We have contributed to the National Transition Network document on structure.

In September we ran some very successful food related events, 'Share the Harvest' and 'Eat the Change', both of which will be further developed next year.  We have also held a joint workshop with the Soil Association which will hopefully at some point in the coming year lead to the establishment of Community Supported Agriculture Projects across Bristol.

In February, Daniel Lerch of Post Carbon Cities in the US gave a talk to Bristol City Council, a very significant outcome of which was the setting up of a Peak Oil Task Force for Bristol, and in the last few days Transition Bristol folk have returned from the Transition Cities Conference in Nottingham, held with the very important aim of trying to work out how Transition might be achieved at city level.

 ...towards 2009

We have achieved a lot, but there is still work ahead!

At the start of the year we will be holding a big open space day for anyone who is interested to have a say in how Transition in Bristol will unfold over the coming year.  What sort of unleashing will we have?  What will it be called?  How will it look? Which working groups will start to form?  When will we start the process of energy descent planning?  These are the exciting things we will need to consider very soon, so hopefully you will be part of this by coming to this open space day and  being a part of the process.  Watch this space and our website for further details!

Happy Christmas and New Year to all of you!

Apple orchards-not executive flats!

Hamilton House, Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3QY

Don't miss this unprecedented opportunity to influence what land is used for in Bristol.

Bristol City Council is currently asking people, businesses and developers how they think land should be used in Bristol between now and 2026. It is urgent that we make use of this opportunity to begin creating and realising our dreams of sustainable, local living. This means we can insist on land for food rather than flats, for example.

The deadline for submitting your suggestions is 19 December

We think this is too short.  If you agree, sign our online petition to have the deadline extended.

The meeting will run as follows:

19:10-19:20 Introduction by Claire Milne of Transition Bristol

19:20-19:40 Talk by Sarah O'Driscoll, Bristol City Council Planning Department

19:40-20:00 Questions

20:00-21:00 Open sessions on:

City Centre Planning-Learn how to find and plot land in your area using City Centre maps as an example.

How to do a land plotting walkabout in your area

Form filling surgery

Ideas for land use change

Neighbourhood space-if there are other people from your area

Sustainable Redland

The Redland group had its AGM on 12 November, where we ran a lively 'carbon counting for beginners' workshop and finished with a party. Events in December will include the Whiteladies Farmers Markets on Friday 5 and Saturday 20 December, and our Orchard workday (weather permitting) on Sunday 21st. We are planning an event for January which will partly be about getting to know new members, and partly for deciding our projects/events/outings etc for 2009. Major themes we want to pursue in 2009 include a garden fruit and veg growing project, and a possible farmlink 'community supported agriculture' project.
