Bristol FoE monthly meeting, Thursday 11 Feb 2010, 35 King St BS1 4DZ (near Old Vic)
from 7:10pm - refreshments and networking
7:30pm - the meeting
around 9pm - adjourn to local bar
Four main pressing topics for this meeting: we will make lists of contacts and actions for each one.
- Environmental hustings for parliamentary elections - it would be good to have events for each constituency to raise environmental issues with all MPs and ppc's. Oxfam is talking a lead in organizing some events but cannot cover all. Wikipedia has good info on constituencies, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Parliamentary_constituencies_in_Avon
- Bristol North West - 24-Feb Sustainable Westbury-on-Trym http://www.suswot.org.uk/ are already holding one
- Bristol West - potential event at Bush House 3rd floor, needs chair and more people to help organise and promote
- Bristol East - no plans yet known of
- Bristol South - no plans yet known of
- Quiz your potential new councillors on environmental issues - we need a list of people from constituencies with elections this year to discuss the issues with their potential councillors and report the results - can you help? Even if your own council seat has no elections this year you may be able to help with another constituency as Bristol FoE is a city-wide organisation. We have a suggested list of topics.
- Eco Show May 29-30 at Harbourside to be run as new area in this year's Bristol Eco-Veggie Fair. Bristol FoE will be helping to host this, promote the show and find speakers and exhibitors. At the EcoShow there will be a Green Homes Tent, a 'Low Carbon Market', spaces (with a screen) with hour-long slots for good speakers on environmental issues, and pitches (indoor and outdoor) available for other participants. The council (Neil Harrison) is interested in participating. We need to find green builders / insulation contractors, renewable energy installers, greener transport people, greener business people, etc to launch this exciting extension to what used to be the Vegan Fair. Tim the organiser is keen to expand in this direction, let's help make it a success.
- Avonmouth biofuels power plant (50MW) - This would initially require a large area of the tropics to grow palm oil, and palm oil production is today one of the two main drivers of tropical forest destruction (the other being animal fodder). It could operate at the expense of 'renewable energy' subsidies under the current government's rules if it is approved by local authority planning and OFGEM renewable accreditation. The legal grounds for planning refusal are unclear and although the council would like to refuse it they are reluctant to spend up to £250k on an enquiry if the government upheld the application. People may want to raise this issue urgently with their MPs, and also come to the planning meeting at 2pm on 24 Feb where the application will be considered to show strength of feeling.
