What is a sustainable supper? Well by that we are suggesting that people bring something to share which might be organic, or locally grown or locally produced or be fairly traded - it is entirely up to you.
We plan to begin the evening with this sociable supper, with topic discussions over supper on issues including Waste, Food, Transport and Energy.
The meetings are open to anyone who lives or works in or around Henleaze with an interest in making Henleaze a more sustainable locality through community action.
Last November / December Sustainable Henleaze ran a Shop locally for Christmas campaign and this year are once again supporting local traders and will be at the Henleaze Christmas Festival on Wednesday 10th December.
The group has also campaigned to reduce free plastic carrier bag distribution by traders and to encourage shoppers to bring their own bags and refuse plastic bags.
In support of the campaign, Lloyds Greengrocers consulted its customers and following postive response now charges for plastic carrier bags whilst Henleaze Garden Shop has produced its own sturdy, affordable (£1) reuseable bag. Chandos Deli is also shunning plastic and offering recyclable alternatives.
It is expected that future activities will be based on informal working groups - groups set up so far are covering Energy, Waste, Transport and Food. The impact that Sustainable Henleaze can make will depend on the level of support for the working groups, so anyone interested should try and come to the AGM on 25th November.
For more information or to be added to the Sustainable Henleaze mailing list either email sustainable.henleaze@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 07939 143785.
Sustainable Henleaze has operated as an informal organisation until now but this is limiting the group’s scope to hold funds and link with other groups. At a meeting of the group on 23rd September a constitution was adopted, which sets out the Aims and Objectives as:
“1. To address the global issues of climate change and environment care in the local community of Henleaze.
2. To reduce the carbon footprint and address the sustainable use of the earth’s resources in Henleaze. We will do this in the local community by sharing concerns, learning and becoming better informed about issues, campaigning for change in society, encouraging and supporting one another in making changes in lifestyle.
3.We recognise that we will be working in a range of areas including domestic energy, transport, recycling, food miles reduction, education, research and the social and economic benefits of energy conservation.
4.We aim to link with organisations with similar aims.”
