Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology - University of Surrey
- Description:
-
The EngD is the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council’s* premier postgraduate research qualification. The Research Engineer (RE) following the four-year EngD Programme is based with the sponsor throughout, conducting research on a project supervised jointly by a team of academics and industrialists. The Programme includes 15 short courses of 1 week’s duration held at the University, integrated throughout the four years to provide background skills and knowledge required for the RE’s project and their future career. The RE appointed will receive a stipend of £25,300 funded by EPSRC* and the sponsor.
A studentship is available with HP Labs Bristol. IT solutions are increasingly recognised as both a source of environmental impacts, while also having great potential to reduce the net environmental impacts across business sectors and having wider benefits for society (e.g. through videoconferencing to reduce travel). The aim of the research is to develop a methodology to assess the direct environmental impacts of a given IT solution and the indirect impacts on the wider system within which it is deployed. A software tool will be developed using this methodology to allow solution architects/ consultants to assess whether the introduction of specific IT solutions will result in a net increase or reduction of impacts and evaluate wider benefits.
HP Labs Bristol is HP's second-largest central research location worldwide and is among the premier corporate research labs in Europe. The laboratory is at the heart of a vibrant academic, cultural and industrial community that includes British Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, Orange and a number of financial services companies. See http://www.hpl.hp.com/bristol/ for details.
