Postdoctoral Research Fellow -Climate Change & Contemporary Literature - University of Exeter

Description:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Climate Change and Contemporary Literature and Culture
School of Arts, Languages and Literatures
(Ref. N1872)
Salary circa: £25,000 pa depending on qualifications & experience

This post is available on a fixed term basis for three years and will be based at Tremough Campus, Cornwall.

We are seeking to recruit a post-doctoral appointment to work collaboratively on an ESF funded project entitled “From Climate to Landscape: Imagining the Future”. This is an interdisciplinary research project between scholars in Biosciences, Geography and English, concerned with the predicting the effects of climate change on specific localities and engaging people with the debate about the desirability of these changes, in particular on the iconic habitats and landscapes that contribute to sense of place.

Post-doctoral appointments will be made respectively in the disciplines of Biosciences, Geography, and English, but will work collaboratively across the interdisciplinary team.

The literary aspect of this project involves an analysis of the ways in which climate change has been imagined in contemporary literary and other cultural texts, and how the reception of cultural constructions of climate change relates to community responses to the issue at large. It aims first to provide the project with a detailed understanding of the place of climate change in contemporary culture and literature, and then to explore this within the context of how individuals and communities react to modelled climate change in familiar landscapes.

Working closely with his/her project supervisor in English, the post-holder will co-author a monograph on climate change and contemporary literature and culture. S/he will also work as part of the project team to achieve the research objectives of the project as a whole.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in English or a related discipline, specialising in contemporary literature or cultural studies, and would ideally have an interest in the relationship between literature and the environment. S/he will have a strong ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team, showing clear understanding of the wider, multidisciplinary implications of his/her research.
